Demonstrates ability to read and understand educational literature related to Educational Technology
Artifact: Online Education, EDCI513
In demonstrating the ability to read and understand educational literature, I can see in retrospect that I grew while going through this program. The artifact to show this competency is from Foundations of Learning Design and Technology, EDCI513. I chose to write a paper about online education since this is what I am most interested in.
I primarily utilized online resources to support both sides of my research since this is the best approach in finding the most current and relevant studies and data. I also utilized the text Teaching and Learning at a Distance, Foundations of Distance Education by Simonson, Smaldino, Albright and Zvacek.
I see this paper as a reflection on my ability to read and understand educational literature especially since I had to siphon through so many sites to determine the best research to use in my research. When I researched sources, I understood how it was applicable and I see that I conveyed a general sense about what online education is all about which was a good thing since I had no previous experience or exposure to researching this topic. What it did for me is to springboard me into understanding educational literature on new levels. With this experience, I have a better foundation of understanding the research that is available and will continue to follow this research to remain current in this field.
Applies knowledge of human learning, diversity, and effective pedagogy to solution of problems
Artifact: Analysis of the Design, Implementation, and Evaluation of a Khan Academy Workshop, EDCI572
In demonstrating the application of the knowledge of human learning, diversity, and effective pedagogy to a solution of problems, I am using an artifact from Introduction to Learning Systems Design, EDCI572. This was a group project where we had to design, implement, and evaluate a learning program. Our topic was implementing Khan Academy into the classroom. With this project, we were able to complete a context and learner analysis, a needs assessment, cognitive task analysis and a formative and summative evaluation. These tasks gave us the opportunity to address the diversity of the target learners and design an effective learning system for this project. In the formative evaluation, the results proved this project to be a success. The workshop was rated as helpful by 87 percent of the learners and eight percent found it extremely helpful so I see that we successfully accomplished this competency. It was helpful that other members of the group had instructional design experience and I learned a lot from this course. This course was also early on in the program and I had many "take-aways" that I was able to apply in subsequent courses.
Demonstrates ability to describe fundamental theories of human learning
Artifact: Addressing a Training Gap, EDCI531
Now that I have completed this program, I see that I can now demonstrate the ability to describe the theories of human learning on a higher level. I can identify and discuss the different learning theories with much more confidence. The artifact for this sub-competency is from Psychology of Learning, EDCI531. This is another class that is offered early in the program so when I reviewed this artifact, I can see growth which is a good thing. This is a case study that was created based on a scenario at Hertz. While I make references to learning theories, they are not necessarily strong compared to how I would address those theories now.
In Foundations of Learning Design and Technology, EDCI513, we had two group projects where we had to create presentations on the topic of learning theories. One was about learning theories in the 90s and the other about the behavioral learning theory. I (and the group) demonstrated this sub-competency by describing the theories and their impact on learning design. Namely, we found that this decade proved to be an important time for the development of instructional technology and constructivism which has had a great impact even today.
