Engage in Professional Development
Demonstrates the disposition for life-long learning and continuous professional development
Artifact: Reflection on My Vision of an Exemplary Educator, EDCI564
First and foremost, I demonstrate this competency by my choice to earn a master's degree in this field. Being a life-long learner is something that has always been important to me and comes naturally. I am always interested in learning something new or expanding on something I already know. Design in general is ever-evolving because of advancements in technology so the only way to remain current is to embrace life-long learning and participate in continuous professional development.
In EDC564, I had to describe my vision of an exemplary technology educator in a discussion. In this artifact, I state "that they should be not only motivated but enthusiastic about technology integration and helping their learners achieve meaningful learning experiences with its use. I see that they would have to also be motivated to stay on top of the latest trends and techniques since it evolves so quickly." When I consider technology from just a few years ago compared to today, I am amazed at how much has changed. The only way to remain relevant today is to continuously learn and develop skills in the area of technology and how it impacts learning.
I created member accounts for DevLearn, the eLearning Guild and the Association of Talent Development so I receive email updates from them often. At some point, I will attend a DevLearn conference. They offer so many sessions on the technology that drives learning and is what interests me most. They also have great keynotes so this would be an excellent learning experience and a way to remain current in this field.
In 2014, I joined the Rocky Mountain chapter of the Association of Talent Development (ATD) and attended three workshops: Crack the Code of Level 2 Test Question Design with Ken Phillips, Game-based Learning: To Play or Not to Play with Carol Clark, and How to Capture Elusive Level 3 Data: The Secrets of Survey Design with Ken Phillips. These were great experiences and led me to discover another training opportunity with ATD. They offer a certification training program for Captivate which I will pursue once I complete this program. I enjoy Captivate and see that this is a good skill set to have in this field.
I follow several design blogs, groups on LinkedIn and participate in tutorials for new techniques to stay current in the field of graphic design. I take several MOOCs each year on various topics via the Canvas Network, Skillshare, and Udemy which are my favorites. I also demonstrate my interest in professional development by earning a Master CIW and MOS PowerPoint certification. Life-long learning is important to me professionally and personally so I demonstrate this competency in my natural desire to continuously learn.
