Communicate Knowledge
Communicates effectively in oral and written formats

For this competency, I am presenting a case facilitation project from Advanced Practices in Learning Systems Design, EDCI672. This was a group project where our group created and facilitated a case analysis discussion activity. The tasks involved in this project were creating a brief analysis of the case, determine the stakeholders, their concerns and their roles in the project, select the week’s readings for our classmates, and designing the discussion activities. We each took on different roles in the process but we facilitated the discussion activities with our fellow classmates as a group. One of my roles in this project was discussion summarizer where my task was to summarize everyone’s posts from each of the three discussion activities for that week. There were many posts to summarize but I feel that I effectively communicated the main points made by all contributors. While I believe that there will always be room for improvement, I feel that I am able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and satisfy this competency.
As an example of communicating orally, I created demonstration videos in the artifact titled Technology Integration Project for EDCI564 which is linked below. The learning module covers some advanced techniques in PowerPoint. I am a PowerPoint Specialist so this is something that is of great interest to me and I believe that I am able to speak to this topic effectively. Professor Sunnie Lee Watson provided feedback that supported this: 'Excellent instruction," and "I can’t wait to try out some of the lessons I’ve learned from your instruction." This was a really fun project to develop since the design and technology is what I am most interested in.
Effectively communicates content through the design and delivery of teaching/learning activities that integrate content and pedagogy
Artifact: Technology Integration Project, EDCI564
My Technology Integration Project focuses on advanced PowerPoint skills that will show learners the processes for creating self-running, interactive and movie-type presentations including how to save and upload them to YouTube. I believe that using Captivate for this self-paced learning module was effective for this topic. I also believe that the learning activities were effective. I attempted to vary them for example, for some activities, I provided software simulations and some were activities directly in PowerPoint from the learner's desktop. Other activities included quizzes, printable step guides and software demonstrations. I believe that I demonstrate this competency well in this artifact and will continue to explore growth opportunities in this area.
Demonstrates the ability to adapt instruction and assessment techniques to the needs of diverse learners
Artifact: Evaluation of an Instructional Product, EDCI672
Artifact: The Evaluation Plan, EDCI672
For this sub-competency, I am sharing two artifacts from Strategic Evaluation and Assessment, EDCI672. Each artifact addresses two very different target audiences. One focuses on a casual and self-motivated learner and the other is required learning for a corporate audience. I had to approach each of these differently and apply different strategies. In demonstrating this competency, I was able to determine that these two different audiences would benefit from evaluations and assessments that were geared specifically for their purposes.
For evaluating an instructional product, I chose a course about the basics of phoneography which is cell phone photography. I am photography hobbyist so this is a topic that interests me greatly. The instruction was created by the University of Delaware but the assessment plan was designed by me and I actually shared this project with the course instructor. I utilized Kirkpatrick's levels one and two, measuring the reaction to the course and measuring learning. In measuring learner reactions, I created a five-question survey with a five-point Likert scale ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. It was quick and simple which fits best with the casual, self-motivated learner.
In creating the Evaluation Plan, I created a proposal for the practicum project for this program. I created a plan for each of the four levels in Kirkpatrick's evaluation model: evaluating reaction, learning, behavior and the results. The assessments were created to not only self-evaluate but provide assessments for stakeholders to determine that learning occurs with the training module. The process in regard to these targeted learners is a more formal process since this is for corporate stakeholders and actual results will be required to determine the success and value of the learning module. Creating this plan was a valuable experience but when it comes time to implement this live via the practicum, it should prove to be an important experience that will help me grow further in this competency.
