Apply Computer-based Technologies and Media to the Solution of Instructional Problems

Artifact: Paper Prototype, EDCI569
Plans and designs effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology and applies technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies
Technology available that can support learning is one of my favorite parts of this field. I went into this program with advanced skills in graphic and web design so I am comfortable with technology and software. I learn new software easily and am always willing to learn the latest techniques. In this program, I was able to learn Captivate and utilize my skills with PowerPoint, PhotoShop and Illustrator when creating a lot of the course projects. I feel confident about this competency and my ability to plan and design effective learning experiences supported by technology.
The first two artifacts linked here are courses that focus on PowerPoint but set in different learning environments. The Technology Integration Project was designed with Captivate and PowerPoint for Learning was developed in Blackboard CourseSites. Both are effective learning environments and offer effective learning experiences that are supported by technology. They both include self-assessments, quizzes, and other learning activities. In the Technology Integration Project, the tools that Adobe Captivate provides to create interactivity such as simulations, assessments, and slider boxes were utilized. In PowerPoint for Learning, CourseSites has built-in quiz and assessment tools that were used in the course. Tools to upload demonstration videos and additional learning aids were also used.
In the Paper Prototype, my partner and I used Captivate to design a learning environment for a learning module titled "Communication for Managers of Remote Employees." Within this course, we utilized several quizzes and assessments including a drag and drop activity to create a variety of learning experiences. Each of the artifacts linked here demonstrate my ability to plan and design effective learning environments and experiences that are supported by technology. My goal is to continue learning about the tools that Captivate offers and any other applicable technology which is important in this field due to fast turnarounds in technology today.
Demonstrates understanding of social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology and applies it in practice
In general and in all of the artifacts presented in this portfolio, I provide attribution and reference information for sources that helped support my work. This has been reinforced with each course since we were required to complete a module about plagiarism and submit a signed document that we passed and that we understand the concept and the issues surrounding a lack of citations.
In each of these artifacts, my understanding of ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of technology is demonstrated in regard to the images used. A license was purchased for each image which covers educational purposes. The license does not require attribution but as I purchase licenses, a copy of the terms is saved in the same folder to serve as a reference and prove that I have a legal right to use that image.
In regard to ethical, social and human issues related to the use of technology and the use of downloaded fonts and images, a message was shared with learners about licensing. The internet and the sharing nature of social media makes this an important aspect to embrace. Not everyone may realize that they can't use anything they find on the internet so this was my opportunity to address this social and human issue:
"It is important to read the EULA (end user licensing agreement) for the fonts that you install. Most of the free fonts that are available are open for use in most circumstances including commercial use – but sometimes there are restrictions that users need to be aware of. It is a good practice to always read the EULA."
I posted a similar statement in regard to images and other media. Since the training is about PowerPoint and presentations typically include some form of media, it is important to include this type of information since not everyone may be aware of the legal and ethical issues surrounding using images without a license. Obviously, not all types of training will need this but I am able to discern when it is appropriate.
Also related to human issues, designing instruction with clear directions is an important aspect to consider. Not everyone has the same level of experience so offering clear directions for learning activities is important. It's also important to provide the learning objectives and other directives within the training. In the three artifacts presented here, I demonstrate this and attempt to make the learning process easy to follow. For example, in the PowerPoint for Learning course, learning objectives are provided for each module along with what activities are available at the beginning so the learner will know where they are and where they are heading. This can move into a social aspect that needs to be considered. If learners are confused, if it is a required learning activity, or they just want to discuss something, they should have a place to easily ask questions and engage with other learners or the instructor. Having forums available were effective learning activities utilizing CourseSite's forum feature in my PowerPoint for Learning course to address this social aspect.
